Cadillac 7 429 V8   -  -  1964      In 1964 there were two different 429 longblocks. The 62, 75 and 86 series cars used a crankshaft with a 3 3/16" hub to fit the Jetaway Hydra-Matic transmission. The Hydra-Matic 429 is reportedly interchangeable with the 1963 390 and vice-versa.
Deville, Fleetwood 60, & Eldorado cars had Turbo-Hydramatic transmissions using a cast iron ring adapter between the block and the trans.  The crankshaft hub is 3". Both versions produce 340 BHP@4600rpm. 480 lb/ft torque @ 3000rpm right head 3632907, Left head 3632909, 1964 block 1481289, side motor mount holes are at head gasket seam.

The remanufactured Cadillac longblock engines larger than 368 inches and newer than 1970 may be had in HO versions that come with upgrade camshafts, Clevite bearings, 3 angle valve jobs and High volume oil pumps.

Our smaller Cadillac remanufactured engines have many improvements over the OEM version.

Question: My car is a 1976 Cadillac Eldorado, it is front wheel drive and I have the original 500ci carburated engine in it. My questions are:

1. Can I put in a 472ci Cadillac engine, a chev 350ci/454ci, or any other cadillac engine instead of the original 500ci in my car?

Reply: Not exactly. I believe the 71-74 472 is a good swap with a fuel pump block off plate if your 500 has EFI. I don't think
your A.I.R.. system will work on the earlier 472. The others are way way more difficult. Start by changing the trans.

2. If so, what modifications must be made (to the oil pan and/or transmission)? Does the engine have to be from a front wheel drive car like mine?

Reply: No, but you have to make sure the block is drilled in the proper location for the dipstick .

3. Can a 500ci engine from an earlier year (i.e. 1972 Eldorado)
be dropped in in place of my original 500ci?

Reply: Not exactly

4. Would my transmission have to be changed if I got another engine installed?

Reply: Yes. for a chev 350ci/454ci

5. If so, what would I need?

Reply: Turbo 350 or 400 for a Chevy

Reply: Very limited options with this engine. I'm not aware of speed parts being available for it although there is certainly a market for it. I don't believe there is even a camshaft upgrade.

Some improvement can be had with valve and cylinder head work along with exhaust improvements. Advance the timing as far as possible and use Amoco Ultimate gas in the tank with Slick 50 or equivalent in the pan.

Reply: Changing to something else is not cost effective.

Replacing the somewhat buggy Ht 4100 engine with one of our bug fixed newer versions is.

  • Internal upgrades include a better intake gasket to stop internal coolant leaks.

  • Improved camshaft composition to resist lobe mushing and to combat accelerated distributor gear wear.

  • Improved cam bearings for better oil pressure and better retention when hot.

  • Better main bearings with tighter clearances to improve oil pressure.

  • Cast iron oil pump with greatly improved wear characteristics over the soft aluminum pump.

  • Cylinders "potted" for better O-ring sealing.

  • Sealed Power piston rings.

  • Tighter rod bearing clearances for improved oiling.

  • Bronze valve guides on both intake and exhaust valves.

AAlthough some of the HT's reputation is deserved, much of it is like having Shannon Dougherty or Sharon Stone for a girlfriend. Even though it has a short temper at certain times the design is so attractive you wouldn't trade it in for a more reliable Ricky Lake type engine. Basically, never ever let it run hot. With it's lightweight bi-metal construction it's junk in 60 seconds. R&R and resurface the intake manifold every 60 thousand miles, get 20-w-50 oil changes, run Slick 50 or equivalent and the average HT will go over two hundred thousand miles.

Reply: We limit upgrading this engine to a custom version of the 4.5 liter engine for a few different reasons, not the least of which is laws from state to state that consider a complete engine change the removal of legally required anti pollution equipment. (fines)

The other alternatives are also heavy and require a computer change, front end alignment, changing the brake proportioning valve, myriad bracket pulley, plumbing and bracket changes, manifolds, exhaust, etc. In short, if you find someone to do it, add at least a few thousand dollars. We party poopers won't do it at any price.

The 4.5 liter engine improves the power situation significantly for not a lot more money and it's difficult to tell the different from the original HT4100 engine other than the power increase.

Having said this, you should know that the design is almost identical to the 4.1 from a reliability standpoint BUT we make over a dozen major changes and improvements to the original engine, whether 4.1 or 4.5. to make it very reliable.
